English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD)

San Clemente is proudly a very multicultural school. Our richness is drawn from over 50 cultures including Tongan, Chinese, Dutch, Fijian, Pakistani, Philippines, Samoan, French, Indian, Italian, Spanish, Croatian, Korean, Macedonian, Indian, Sudanese, Senegalese, Liberian, Ugandan, Burundian, Iranian, Japanese, Polish, Tibetan and Vietnamese. At present, about 20% of our school population is from a non English speaking background.

Esl1The EALD room in the Feldt Learning Centre is staffed by both Learning Support Assistants and teachers. We can, therefore support students both in the mainstream classes and in a one-to-one capacity in the Feldt Learning Centre (EALD). The staff members are timetabled to either be in classes or in the FLC wherever the EALD students’ needs are best met.

As well as catering to the educational needs of the EALD students San Clemente has links with outside and community agencies like NSW Surf Lifesaving, Newcastle City Council, the Loft, Startts, Careerlinks, Newcastle University, Northern Settlement Services, NSW Police and Department of Sport and Recreation.

All students who are from a Language Other Than English (LOTE) background can be assisted through the support of the Feldt Learning Centre - EALD Department, which is an integral part of the Learning Support Centre of San Clemente.
